EWB Spring Gala at Mosher Alumni House

Please join us for this year's Engineers Without Borders Spring Gala to be held on Fri May 30 at 6 pm in the Mosher Alumni House at UCSB. Join us and the rest of the local community to our 'Open House' for an *evening of food, wine, live jazz music, and good company* as we exhibit our projects and thank all of our supporters.

This is an opportunity to learn more about what EWB has been doing for the past year, while meeting new people and seeing old friends. There will also be wine and appetizers as well as the jazz band Bren Grass performing for the guests. Mosher Alumni House is the sparkling new building on the UCSB campus that is adjacent to Campbell Hall on Mesa Road.

EWB Southern California Workshop

There will be a Southern Cal. EWB Workshop day on May 17th at UC Irvine. This will be a great opportunity to learn from others and to help those chapters that are just starting out. A number of topics and activities will be addressed. More info to come.

EWB-UCSB Receives Brook Family Foundation Grant

EWB-UCSB is happy to announce that they received a Brook Family Foundation grant for $2000. This grant will be applied to the Peru Project in Araypallpa and Sankka this Summer.

EWB General Meeting

EWB is proud to have special guest speaker John Wind at our 5/7/08 General Meeting. John will be will be speaking about EWB-SFP chapter activities including projects, appropriate technology team, and what skills their members can offer.

John Wind has technical expertise in membrane-based separations for gas
purification, renewable energy, and cogeneration power systems. John holds
a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin (2002)
and a BS in chemical engineering from Purdue University (1996). Prior to
joining Chevron, John also worked for the University of Washington, Air
Products and Lyondell Petrochemical. He joined Chevron in 2004 where he
contributed to the development of new membrane materials and processes for natural gas, hydrogen and ethanol separations. His current work focuses on working with Chevron’s business units to deal proactively with emerging global issues such as greenhouse gas mitigation, water sustainability and sustainable community development. John is also assistant manager for the
Advanced Energy Focus Area, which manages a broad portfolio of renewable
energy and fuels projects. He is an active volunteer for the San Francisco
Professionals chapter of Engineers Without Borders-USA (EWB).

Workshop - Participatory Community-Based Development

David Bartecchi of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) (www.colostate.edu/Orgs/IISD) and The Consortium for Sustainable Village-Based Development (www.villageearth.org) will be conducting a 2-day weekend workshop in Participatory Community-Based Development April 26th from 1pm - 9pm and April 27th from 9am to 5pm at UCSB. The focus will include the history of community-based development, community mobilization, participatory strategic planning, and participatory assessment, monitoring, and evaluation. UCSB Chapter Wins Two Conference Awards

EWB-UCSB’s poster outlining our ongoing Peru project (5 years and running) won the best poster prize.

Flower Pots and Calendars for Sale

The Kenya team is selling several items on behalf of their partners: African Children’s Project and Visting Nurse and Hospice Care of Santa Barbara (VNHCSB.) Proceeds will go toward improving the infrastructure of a health clinic in Lwanda, Kenya as well as supporting orphaned children from the area.

The pots were donated to the African Children’s Project by local nurseries. They are asking for a $2 donation per pot. Pots range in size and shape. Please see the link to pictures.

Also for sale are calendars of art work created by HIV/AIDS orphans in Mbita, a western Kenyan village. VNHCSB and Viagenco Comprehensive Care in Mbita raises the funds to support the schooling of over 130 orphaned children. All proceeds from calendar sales go directly to the orphan support program of Viagenco Comprehensive Care.
