Mission
We are professionals providing high quality educational
training, design assistance, and mechanical fabrication services
for faculty, students and staff of the College of Engineering
in support of its mission of education, research and service.
We maintain a productive, safe environment, and work collaboratively
to provide timely, cost effective and practical solutions for
the College of Engineering.
About the Shop
The College of Engineering Machine Shop provides unique capabilities
to the University of California at Santa Barbara. It consists
of a full-service research shop that provides machining, assembly
and fabrication services in support of research projects and instructional
laboratories. The Machine Shop also includes a student shop which
provides instruction in shop operation and safety and facilities
for fabrication of student design projects. The Machine Shop also
maintains metal stock and fasteners for College laboratories and
student projects.
In addition to physical facilities, machines and tooling, the Machine Shop
includes a professional staff of mechanicians who provide fabrication services,
design assistance and consultation with shop users.
Machines available in the Machine Shop include lathes and vertical mills (including
computer-numerically controlled machines), sheet metal tools, welding equipment
and sinker and wire electrical discharge machining (EDM). Comprehensive tooling
is available for many of the machines.
The Machine Shop staff have extensive experience with Electrical Discharge
Machining (both wire and sinker) and two world class wire EDM's to meet your
special needs.
The Machine Shop staff and the College of Engineering are partners in helping
to fulfill the University's mission of research, education and community service.
Through its experience with College of Engineering faculty, staff and students,
the Machine Shop is uniquely aware of the special requirements of the College's
work. For many years, the Machine Shop has developed machines, tooling and expertise
in working with novel materials developed by college researchers. In cooperation
with College of Engineering personnel, the Machine Shop has produced innovative
designs in response to challenging specifications and demanding schedules. The
Machine Shop staff wishes to continue and expand this cooperative and collaborative
relationship.
Hours and Access
- The shop is maintained for the use of College of Engineering
students, staff and faculty working on University projects.
