The hal1.engr.ucsb.edu fileserver crashed with an operating system kernel panic at approximately 10:30pm 15 September 2009.  Staff arrived shortly thereafter to bring the system back online.  As it had been up and running for such a long duration, a mandatory check of all filesystems was required during the reboot.  Once the filesystem checks were complete, service was restored.  During this period services needing access to user home directories (such as most email access) was unavailable.  

Web services for user web pages were not restored until around 8am due to remote filesystem mounts from the crashed fileserver needing to be reset manually.
