This morning around 5am one of the key file servers (hal1.engr.ucsb.edu) experienced a fault with its disk array/controller subsystem that rendered some data unreadable (the array was partially readable, with some data blocks being retrievable, and some data blocks showing as bad).  This rendered file services to many home directories inaccessible and mail files inaccessible. 

Service was restored around 8:30am after the system was rebooted; however, the disk array is operating at a diminished speed; debugging procedures are continuing so that we can determine where the fault lies (with the controller, possibly cabling, or with the disk array unit itself).
