Department Services

Some additional services that ECI provides to departments include:

DHCP – Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol can be made available to departments who reside on ECI managed networks. DHCP provides support for networked devices, providing various configuration parameters such as IP addresses, DNS settings, etc.

System Log Monitoring – ECI has a log monitoring infrastructure in place that departments may participate in. This is based on the syslog standard and therefore requires the logging clients to use syslog and for them to forward messages to a central log server. There are syslog clients for almost all platforms. Logs can be accessed through a searchable web interface. Additionally, the LogSurfer package is installed and can be configured to send alerts to departmental computer support staff in a highly configurable way.

Network Monitoring – ECI has AdventNet's OpManager installed and monitoring ECI managed networks. ECI can monitor department's managed networked devices and provide stats such as CPU, memory, and bandwidth utilization. Graphs and data are viewable through a web interface.

Host and service monitoring – ECI has Nagios installed and available for departments to use. Nagios can monitor host and service availability and send out alerts based on criteria that you define. Graphs and data are viewable through a web interface.

Security scanning – ECI provides security scanning of networks using the Nessus scanner.  You provide us with a list of hosts or networks and we will scan them periodically and email you the results.  This is a great way for departments to get a better picture of where they are in terms of security as well as getting a network inventory.

Mail Lists – ECI provides a MailMan listserver that allows for mail list management. This is in addition to the automatically generated mailing list based on account type.

Web Server Statistics – ECI can provide monthly stats for COE departments using the COE webserver via the AWStats package.

Virtual web hosting – ECI can provide Apache virtual hosting for COE departments using the COE webserver.

Email Domains – ECI can provide email domains for COE departments using the COE mailserver.

Feedback web application – The Feedback web application provides for a way for students to participate in anonymous online class surveys. A department administrator uploads class lists, creates surveys for particular classes, and enrolled student can then login using their UCSB NetID and participate. The results are available with graphs, exportable to csv files, and can be made available to faculty teaching a given class.

yea web application – The yea web application was designed to provide a secure and anonymous mechanism for faculty vote casting and tallying. yea does not keep track of how individual voters vote but only whether or not they have voted. This application has been used as a way for faculty to decide merit cases and other uses as well. It makes use of the UCSB NetID for authentication.
