The Alan and Ruth Heeger Chair in Interdisciplinary Science

The UC Santa Barbara College of Engineering and Division of Mathematical, Life and Physical Sciences are now accepting applications and nominations for the chairholder of the Alan and Ruth Heeger Chair in Interdisciplinary Science. Candidates for the endowed chair must hold a Ph.D. in a science or engineering field, and be engaged in research at the interface of such disciplines as Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Systems Biology, Computational and Information Science and Technology, and/or Nanotechnology, as well as other interdisciplinary areas of science or engineering.

The holder of the Heeger Chair may be appointed at a senior, tenured level, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2008, either in the College of Engineering or in the Division of Mathematical, Life, and Physical Sciences, which are well-recognized and highly regarded for their high quality and interdisciplinary leadership. UC Santa Barbara is one of the most rapidly ascending major research universities as recognized by the award of five Nobel Prizes to our faculty in the last eight years. The College of Engineering has the highest percentage of faculty membership in the National Academy of Engineering in the country. Its graduates have attained senior management positions in dozens of major corporations. More than fifty College of Engineering spin-out companies have generated several hundred million dollars in merger and acquisition activity in recent years. The Division of Mathematical, Life and Physical Sciences faculty lead important federally funded research centers; among them the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, the Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies, the Marine Science Institute, and the Southern California Earthquake Center. The faculty include fourteen members of the National Academy of Sciences, one member of the Institute of Medicine, and many PECASE, NSF CAREER, Packard, Guggenheim, and Sloan Fellowship awardees.
