♦ Budgeting and Fiscal Management ♦
Graduates should possess an understanding of and appreciation for the dynamics involved in utilizing financial resources in the implementation of student affairs programs and services. Specifically, students should be able to:
- develop and defend a budget to support a student affairs program;
- perform all of the functions necessary to access and manage those resources which have been dedicated to a student affairs program.
I understand the importance of thoughtful resource use and the necessity of careful budgeting and fiscal management. My campus responsibilities in creating a program budget have been minimal, but I have numerous related experiences.
- During my first Student Affairs position at U.C. Santa Barbara, I was awarded a ‘Staff Incentive Award’ in part for diligence in recovering hundreds of dollars every month in departmental recharges.
Incentive Award Memo - In my second Student Affairs position, I handled the payroll for over 600 limited status recreation employees annually, as half of my position at the campus Department of Physical Activities and Recreation. The other half of my job entailed hiring, training, scheduling and handling the payroll for the 90 student employees who staffed the Student Recreation Center.
Lakers - In my third Student Affairs position, I overemphasized my favorite job responsibility (direct interaction with potential students) and failed to adequately nurture the Admissions Tour Program. Fortunately, that program has flourished in the hands of my successor, and I was able to combine my tour experience at the Visitor Center with the vision of capturing prior lost opportunities when I designed a potential tour program for the College of Engineering. Complimenting the Tour Program Proposal is a new Job Description, a position developed for the tour program and to assist multiple over-extended existing college programs.

Tacy Assistant Job Description - In my current Student Affairs position, I design and manage numerous programs that are funded by various campus operations. I am not currently responsible for budgeting or fiscal management.
- My most extensive budget and fiscal management experience occurred when I was director of a non-profit, community soccer league, where about half of the participants were community college and university students.
