Competencies

♦Effective Relationships on Campus and in the Community♦

Graduates should be able to relate effectively with a wide range of people. Specifically, students should be able to demonstrate relational and professional competence:

  • in relating across cultural boundaries with many different kinds of people;
  • in relating across functional boundaries with people of widely varied roles within higher education;
  • as representatives of the institutions they serve to those within the larger community.

I have the pleasure of serving a diverse student population. My colleagues and my friends also represent multiple cultures, religions, academic interests, and backgrounds. My outreach and recruitment responsibilities and participation on various Governing and Advising Boards allows me to interact with people and student affair’s offices across campus, in the community, and beyond. My StrengthFinder traits of ‘includer’, ‘positivity’, and ‘WOO,’ indicate that I am well-suited for outreach and community work.

  • The following is a thank you note from a school counselor who asked for a presentation on ‘engineering as a potential major and how to prepare for college’ at the last minute.

  • I was selected as the staff representative for the Chancellor’s Outreach Advisory Board, twice. The Board oversees all campus outreach and allows me to work directly with campus policy-makers on issues dear to my heart.

  • The Recreation Center Governance Board makes policy and operational decisions regarding a $26 million student funded Recreation and Sport Complex on campus. This student–run facility is a wonderful addition to the campus, and to the community. The alumni and faculty representatives and I can vote but more often adopt an advisory stance, letting the student members decide on the issues. This role presents multiple teaching opportunities for me.

  • Personal contact is, by far, the most effective outreach tool. Instant messaging may be faster, but a smile, a handshake and human interaction cannot be replaced electronically or with a glossy brochure. My lifelong passion for learning fuels my work and I am always eager to go into the community. I work closely with the local 2-year colleges and when Professor Dal Bello volunteered to write me a recommendation letter for my Capstone, I was thrilled by his offer. Also included is a nice note from the Transfer Academy Director at Santa Barbara Community College.
