The group is located in the Materials Department in Elings Hall on the UCSB campus. Our research focus is the exploration of magnetism, lattice dynamics, and novel phase phenomena in spin-orbit driven phases of matter, unconventional superconductors, and, more broadly, emergence in correlated electron materials. Specific areas under investigation include spin-orbit Mott phases in iridium oxides, topologically nontrivial states, high temperature superconductors, symmetry breaking in itinerant magnets, and quantum criticality near magnetic instabilities.
The primary experimental tools used in our studies are scattering techniques in addition to bulk electronic properties characterization. We conduct experiments at both national and international neutron and x-ray sources exploring static and fluctuating phase behavior, whereas our on campus activities encompass single crystal growth and novel materials synthesis complemented by bulk property measurements.
