Rod Alferness, dean of UC Santa Barbara’s College of Engineering, has been named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. He was recognized for his groundbreaking work, performed with colleagues at Bell Labs, to enhance the emerging optical telecommunications infrastructure, or the fiberoptic network, with devices and architecture that not only eliminated key bottlenecks on the information superhighway, but also vastly improved its capacity.
