Dual College Double Majors

Students enrolled as an undergraduate in the College of Engineering may pursue a second major with almost any major in the College of Letters & Science or College of Creative Studies (with the exception of the Computing emphasis in Creative Studies). Students may not double major in two College of Engineering majors.

There are several issues to keep in mind when considering a double major:

  • A maximum of 8 units may be applied simultaneously to the upper-division requirements of the two majors.
  • There is no limitation on the number of preparatory courses that overlap.
  • You must meet the General Education requirements for both majors, however you may overlap requirements where applicable
  • At the time you apply for the double major, you must complete a proposal demonstrating the ability to complete all requirements within a timely manner.
  • The College of the second major may have additional restrictions which must be met. Please consult with both colleges prior to pursuing the double major.
  • Note: A dual college double major in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry is not an option due to course requirement restrictions.

Minors

Students in the College of Engineering are allowed to pursue a minor offered in the College of Letters & Science. There are no minors offered in the College of Engineering.

Some notes about minors:

  • A maximum of 5 units may be applied simultaneously to the upper-division requirements of the major and minor.
  • There is no limitation on the number of preparatory courses that overlap.
  • Completion of an approved minor, in a discipline encompassed by areas D, E, F, or G will satisfy the depth requirement by petition.  Please consult an advisor in the College of Engineering for more information about this petition.
  • Courses taken for the minor may be used to meet College of Engineering General Education requirements, where applicable.
  • Minors at UCSB are tracked by the department offering the minor. To indicate your interest in pursuing a minor program please consult the undergraduate advisor in the corresponding department.
